A Manila, Arkansas native, 10U Head Coach Scotty Watkins joins the North Stars Baseball Club coaching ranks after a successful high school and college baseball career. This will be Coach Watkins’ first year with the North Stars and leans into teamwork, work ethic, and discipline as coaching philosophy pillars. Overall, this will be Scotty’s 7th year coaching youth athletes at various ages and skill levels.

Like most high school players, Coach Watkins played multiple positions in high school but eventually settled into pitching as his favorite part of the game and decided that to play at the next level that it would be his concentration. Playing for his home town Lions at Manila High School in Arkansas, Scotty ended a decorated high school career having picked up honors as All Conference, All Region, All-State and received a prestigious invite his Senior year to play in the All-American Game in Baltimore Maryland.

After High School, Scotty made his way to Division II University of Arkansas Monticello where he completed five full years of playing baseball at the college level. His time in college was highlighted by becoming a full time starter for the Boll Weevils (1 of 3 such positions on the team) which saw him and his teammates set the school record for best multi-year record in school history. The opportunity to play college baseball was a great experience for him, and something he had desired to do as a youngster.

Coach Watkins’ blue collar coaching philosophy focuses on equipping his athletes for success on the field and off the field. Once the kids get out of high school and enter the real world they will need skills for teamwork, work ethic, discipline, successes, and failures. Coach Watkins is a strong supporter of youth sports and believes it is just as important to learn how to deal with challenges and adversity as it is to bunt, catch and throw. Scotty will expect a great deal from the player and parents, but hopes to help kids grow and learn through the great sport of baseball.

As a valued member of the Fairbanks community, Coach Watkins works as a Commercial Loan Team Lead for Northrim Bank. Along with his wife Bridget (an ER nurse at FMH who will be running her first Iditarod in 2022), Scotty has two boys River age 7 and Timber age 10 and enjoys Alaska for the vast outdoor opportunities (besides baseball of course).
